You've had your session. The hard part is done. What happens in the hours and days after treatment plays a meaningful role in your results — how well your skin heals, how effectively your body clears the broken-down ink, and how ready you are for your next session.

Here's everything you need to know about aftercare for laser tattoo removal, from the team at Bare Again in Chelsea.

What to Expect Immediately After Treatment

It's completely normal to experience some or all of the following in the first 24 to 72 hours after a session:

  • Redness and warmth at the treatment site — similar to mild sunburn

  • Mild swelling or puffiness around the treated area

  • Pinpoint bleeding or frosting (a white or grey colour change in the skin immediately after treatment) — this is a normal laser response and resolves within minutes

  • Tenderness or sensitivity when touching the area

  • In some cases, small blisters may form — this is a normal healing response

These reactions are a sign that the laser has done its job. They typically resolve within 3 to 7 days.

What to Do After Treatment

Keep the area clean

Gently cleanse the treated area with mild soap and lukewarm water once or twice a day. Pat dry with a clean cloth — do not rub. Keeping the area clean reduces the risk of infection while the skin heals.

Apply the recommended aftercare product

Your treating practitioner will recommend a soothing balm or healing ointment to apply to the area. Apply a thin layer as directed — typically two to three times per day for the first 3 to 5 days. This keeps the skin hydrated and supports the healing process.

Keep it covered if needed

If the treated area is on a part of the body that rubs against clothing or is exposed to the elements, a non-stick sterile dressing can be applied for the first 24 to 48 hours. Avoid anything with adhesive directly on the treated skin.

Stay hydrated

Hydration supports your immune system's ability to clear the broken-down ink particles from your body. Drink plenty of water in the days following treatment.

Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen once healed

Once the treated area has healed, applying SPF 50+ sunscreen every morning is one of the most important things you can do between sessions. Sun exposure on treated skin can cause pigmentation changes and significantly slow your results.

What to Avoid After Treatment

Avoid sun exposure — including tanning beds

Do not expose the treated area to direct sun for a minimum of 4 weeks after treatment. UV exposure on healing laser-treated skin dramatically increases the risk of hyperpigmentation (dark marks) and can interfere with your results. If sun exposure is unavoidable, cover the area completely or apply SPF 50+.

Don't pick, scratch, or pop blisters

If blisters form, resist the urge to pop or pick at them. Interfering with blisters significantly increases the risk of scarring and infection. Allow them to resolve naturally. If a blister breaks on its own, keep the area clean and covered.

Avoid swimming and soaking

Stay out of swimming pools, the ocean, spas, and baths for at least 72 hours after treatment. Prolonged soaking softens the skin and can interfere with healing. Chlorinated water carries additional infection risk on treated skin.

Skip intense exercise for 24–48 hours

Heavy exercise causes increased blood flow, sweating, and heat — all of which can intensify inflammation at the treatment site. Light walking is fine, but hold off on high-intensity activity for at least 24 to 48 hours.

Avoid makeup or skincare products on the area

Don't apply makeup, moisturiser, deodorant, or any skincare product directly to the treated area until it has fully healed. Many products contain ingredients that can irritate compromised skin or introduce bacteria.

Avoid shaving over the treated area

If the treated area is on a part of the body you shave, avoid doing so until the skin has fully healed — typically 5 to 7 days after treatment.

When to Contact Us

Most healing is straightforward and uneventful. However, contact Bare Again if you notice:

  • Significant increasing pain, redness, or swelling beyond the first 72 hours

  • Pus or unusual discharge from the treatment site

  • Fever or signs of systemic infection

  • Anything that feels unusual or that you're unsure about

We're always here to help — don't hesitate to call us on 0419 207 360.

Between Sessions

Once your skin has fully healed — typically within one to two weeks — the most important things you can do between sessions are: wear SPF 50+ every day on the treated area, stay hydrated, and avoid smoking if possible (smoking has been shown to slow the ink clearance process by reducing immune function).

Your next session will be scheduled 6 to 8 weeks after the current one. This interval isn't arbitrary — it's the time your immune system needs to clear the broken-down ink before the next treatment can effectively reach deeper layers.
